There's always a bit of excitement when we roast a new bean for the first time ... this time it's a Peruvian Organic and Fair Trade from Perhusa. The bean is designated as Grade 1, SHB. Fair Trade and Organic
The term SHB refers to "Strictly Hard Bean" and is synonymous with "SHG" which stands for "Strictly High Grown"
I'm not sure what the "strictly" bit is about, but the terms are used for beans usually grown at an altitude of 4500' or more, which results in a more desirable, harder and denser bean.
We roasted it this morning (to beat the heat of the day - it's a hot job roasting coffee!) to our popular dark roast.
So how is it?
To start with, the beans are larger than most we have roasted - very clean (little chaff) and they roasted very evenly. We tried some right away (no resting period for these beans!) - and love it!
A very smooth coffee, mellow and full-bodied - not harsh, fut flavorful - anytime coffee!
